KEDAH · MEMORY · FORM
Completed in 1912, Masjid Zahir stands on the former burial ground of Kedah warriors who fell during the Siamese invasion of 1821. State history and an ongoing life of worship meet in one living courtyard.
Its design draws inspiration from the Azizi Mosque in North Sumatra. Five smaller black domes around the principal dome represent the Five Pillars of Islam, while paired columns and decorated arches give rhythm to the verandahs.
